BEGINNER EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS CHECKLIST

Real-World Readiness for Normal People

This checklist is designed to help you stay functional during common disruptions — power outages, severe weather, infrastructure failures, and short-term supply interruptions.

You do not need everything at once.
Start where you are. Build steadily.

Your first goal: operate independently for 72 hours minimum.

Check items as you complete them.

WATER (NON-NEGOTIABLE)

☐ Store at least 1 gallon of water per person per day (3+ days minimum)
☐ Add extra water for pets
☐ Have a reliable water filter (not just bottled water)
☐ Have a backup purification method (tablets, drops, or boiling capability)
☐ Store water in multiple containers (not one single point of failure)
☐ Know where your home water shutoff is located

Goal: You can safely drink, cook, and maintain basic hygiene without outside supply.

LIGHT & POWER

☐ At least 2 reliable flashlights
☐ If possible, 1 area lantern for room lighting
☐ Extra batteries stored in one location
☐ Backup phone charging method (power bank minimum)
☐ Long-duration lighting option (battery lantern or rechargeable system)
☐ Know how to move safely through your home in total darkness

Goal: Darkness never controls your movement, safety, or decision-making.

COMMUNICATION & INFORMATION

☐ Emergency radio (NOAA or weather band preferred)
☐ Backup way to receive alerts if internet and cell service fail
☐ Written list of emergency contacts (not just stored in phone)
☐ Family communication plan if separated
☐ Know local emergency alert systems in your area

Goal: You can receive information and communicate even when networks fail.

FOOD (SIMPLE & PRACTICAL)

☐ 3-day supply of non-perishable food you actually eat
☐ Manual can opener
☐ No-power cooking method (camp stove, grill, etc.)
☐ Basic utensils and paper goods
☐ Food that requires minimal water to prepare

Goal: You can eat normally without refrigeration or electricity.

MEDICAL & PERSONAL CARE

☐ Basic first aid kit
☐ 7-day supply of prescription medications if possible
☐ Pain relievers and common OTC medications
☐ Hygiene supplies (soap, wipes, sanitizer, toilet paper)
☐ Spare glasses or essential medical devices if needed

Goal: Minor injuries and routine needs don’t become emergencies.

HOME SAFETY & FUNCTION

☐ Fire extinguisher (accessible and charged)
☐ Extra blankets or temperature control options
☐ Shoes accessible near bed (night emergencies)
☐ Basic tool kit
☐ Know how to shut off utilities if necessary
☐ Cash in small bills (card systems fail)

Goal: Your home remains safe and livable when systems stop working.

DOCUMENTS & CRITICAL INFORMATION

☐ Copies of ID and insurance documents
☐ Medical information list
☐ Emergency contact list
☐ Stored in waterproof container or digital backup

Goal: Important information remains accessible no matter what.

PERSONAL READINESS

☐ Family members know where emergency supplies are stored
☐ Everyone understands the household emergency plan
☐ You have tested your lights, radio, and backup power
☐ You have actually used your equipment at least once

Goal: Preparedness is practiced — not theoretical.

BASELINE READINESS CHECK

If the power goes out for 72 hours right now, can you:

☐ Drink safely
☐ See in the dark
☐ Receive reliable information
☐ Eat normally
☐ Manage minor injuries
☐ Stay warm or cool
☐ Communicate with family

If any answer is no — that’s your next priority.

REMEMBER

Preparedness is not about fear.
It is about capability.

Small improvements create real security.
Consistency beats intensity.

Build your readiness the same way you build anything that lasts — one practical step at a time.

Stay ready. Stay rational.
— Apocalypse Approved
